Selecting a senior portrait photographer

April vacation is over and school is winding down for the season. Soon your juniors will enter the summer before their SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL! Where did the time go? I guess they were right when they said the days were long, but the years fast. So very fast.

If you are starting the process of finding the right photographer to photograph your son or daughter for their senior portraits here are few things to consider.

  1. Professional v. Amateur - If these portraits are very important to you and your child this is not the time to have your “friend with a nice camera” take their portraits. A nice camera cannot pose you, it cannot make you feel at ease and highlight your best features, and it cannot retouch your images with the highest level of professional artistry.

  2. Studio v. Environmental - It is a good idea to know what type of portrait you are seeking. Some photographers offer both, while some only offer one option. You will want to think about what you are looking for prior to finding the right photographer for you.

  3. Experience - You will want to select someone who has worked with seniors. Now is not the time to hire the photographer who photographed your baby niece if they have no experience with senior portraits.

  4. Connect - It is important that you and your child feel comfortable with the photographer you select. It is worth your time to spend a few minutes on the phone with your photographer. You can learn a lot in a few minutes on the phone about how well you will connect in person.

Meet Claire! I am always humbled to be part of this stage of life for young adults. They are about to close one chapter and move on to a whole new world. I enjoy hearing about what they are doing now and what they hope to be doing in the future. They are full of hope and an eagerness to do something great in the world. I always leave my senior sessions feeling a little more inspired than when I arrived. Hope you had an amazing year Claire and best of luck to you in the future!!
